July 15, 2010

So just as fast as everything was planted and weeded, and weeded and planted, it's all coming up already!  Dwayne said that we will begin hitting markets now pretty quick.  The earlier crops will be new potatoes, cucumbers, lettuce, rhubarb, beans and I don't remember the rest.  What's new.  I've taken a lot of pictures and just plan on sharing them.

GUESS WHO IS STILL WITH US?  Isn't she cute? It seems that
Newt has other plans right now other than checking out.  She is in
no way suffering.  She's calm, content, and in no distress whatsoever, however, she is nothing but skin and bones.  She spends her days sleeping in the van or in the backseat of the boys car and she makes regular trips to see how everyone is doing.  She'll go check Dwayne in the greenhouse, she'll find Alton for her pat on the head and praises of being a "good girl," then she'll come up to the porch to sit by me for awhile.  What a dog.

Remember the day I showed you the transformed greenhouse not very long ago? This is what it looks like now. It is full of tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers.

This is the bread that Dwayne makes every couple of weeks.
They never buy bread. Who would when you can make bread like
that!

Dwayne's brother, Garth, is responsible for pretty much all of the
flowers found around the place.  He, too, has quite a green thumb.
This isn't the best picture of Garth, but I like it.  I'll get some better.  Sunday is his birthday!  Happy Birthday Garth!  Here are some of the many flowers he plants and cares for.

So I guess that's it for flowers right now.  I plan on taking the next blog to show nothing but the garden and the many crops.  That will be fun and exciting, and I know you've been waiting for it! (I'm alright don't worry.)  You'll also get to see the results of a whole lot of weeding goin on!

This is looking down the driveway to the road.

Good Times/Sad Times

Well, it's not all fun and games (and work) at the farm.  Last week we all noticed that Newt was loosing weight quickly and feeling pretty bad.  We got her into the vet and had some blood work done.  It seems that Newt is in renal failure and doesn't have much more time in this existence or incarnation.  Newt's mother, Ripply, was Alton's original dog when Dwayne and he first met, and her life ended in the same way.  It has hung an air of somberness, as watching a good friend leave often does.  The guys have displayed exceptional creativity in finding ways to keep her eating.  Right now she has chosen those little cocktail smokies. She finds them to be delicious.

On Friday night we headed into Saskatoon to see Macy Gray at the Sasktel Saskatchewan Jazz Festival.  She was incredible, as well as a very much needed diversion from what's going on here.  The concert was outdoors behind this big beautiful building that I believe was at one time a castle, then a train station/hotel, and is now a hotel.  It was a smaller venue and we all stood right up front about 20 feet from her.  I think I could see her tonsils.  See her if you ever get the chance.  She puts on a really good show.

Yesterday it rained.  The first in quite awhile and we probably needed it, but you never know by listening to Dwayne's complaining about the rain. Today the sun is out, but too wet in the garden.  Another greatly appreciated day off.  "HE" made us work on the 4th!  But we did take Canada Day off (July 1st), barbequed and had a big fire in the pit.
